Long, Long, Long

'Long, Long, Long'
by George Harrison

It's been a long long long time,
How could I ever have lost you
When I loved you.

It took a long long long time
Now I'm so happy I found you
How I love you

So many tears I was searching,
So many tears I was wasting, oh. Oh--

Now I can see you, be you
How can I ever misplace you
How I want you
Oh I love you
You know that I need you.
Ooh I love you.

Overall it's pretty good as a song. I might suggest changing a couple things--mostly just who it's addressing. The open quality doesn't really add anything here, just muddles the meaning. Also "So many tears I was searching" doesn't really make sense. I'd rewrite that line; maybe change "searching" to "crying" or "shedding." The word "misplace" is also kind of weird. I guess it makes sense when you think about it, but I'm not sure you should have to. In my opinion, it would probably be better if it were something like "replace." I definitely agree with the verse order, and think it's smart that they change up the lyrics. Songs that just repeat the same verse lyrics drive me nuts (I'm talking to you, Morrison!), and by the same token, I love it when there are variations in a song's refrain (i.e. Mrs. Robinson has that great refrain but it feels like it's something more than that every time it switches up). All this said, I'd probably extend the length of the song by having a ((dare I say it?) long, long) longer instrumental section. But I mean, I don't think anyone could do that, or make any other major changes to the song and still have it work, save for George Harrison--thus, this is all basically a mute point.

But then again, you have to wonder what old Slowhand could do with a gem like this, if he wanted to...

p.s. Lifting the title from the first line of the song? Not a huge fan of the practice, especially with this song in particular. This is a piece that really could get away with being called "untitled" or just having a blank space in the liner notes where a title should go (blank space on the white album? heaven help us all!).

When I'm alone, I dream that George Harrison writes songs for me, but the lyrics aren't about love. They're about Anglo-Saxon warriors conquering nations.

A girl can dream, right?
