I wouldn't say I don't enjoy going to the theatre anymore. It's true that everything out there is an utter waste of space, time, and money; but, with that caveat in mind, I'd encourage others to see a show, and at the very least, use the experience for a chance to reflect on better ideas. That's what I do. For example, last night I came up with several GOOD stories to put on stage.
At this point in the post, I would like to call attention to the title. Dramatic economy is a term I use to describe the marginal value of producing something versus the marginal value of not doing work. (This also came to me last night.)
For example: I would very much like to see a piece where Ernie Hudson is confronted by Egon Spengler. Talk about clash of the titans. Major conflict of irrelevance when Ernie doesn't get what's going on and Dr. Spengler has to move on to a more important call. Now, it's pretty clear that this scene should be written; but, the same paralyzing irony that is so conceptually funny is also road block numero uno. Not writing this scene is a GREAT use of my time. And I think if we had some graph paper and a scanner there'd be a chart showing that in this case not-work is just a bit better than writing a not-play.
I really hope someone has already used the term dramatic economy for something more legitimate.
